Laying out the points on the ground, as designed by architects or engineers, is a process of ensuring design consistency, verifying construction setbacks, and marking the points on the ground for construction purposes. 

This component of surveying usually shares aspects of cadastral and planning, in terms of identifing the property boundaries to ensure that structures meet zoning setbacks.  One must also take into account topographic elements.
